On July 9, 18 members of the Silver Strand Art Group visited the Hammer Museum.
We were met by a docent who guided us through the Made in LA exhibit. The art in this exhibit was created by Los Angeles artists working in many mediums.
We were fascinated by the art of Kelly Akashi. The docent helped us expand our interpretations of Kelly’s art.
Kelly grew up in our Silver Strand Community. Her mother, Penny Akashi, helped us understand her daughter’s process and concepts.
Our group under one of Kelly’s creations, which was hung in a prominent space in the courtyard of the museum.
Another space that interested our group was the installation of Rafa Esparza. We walked on the adobe bricks that formed the foundation of his artistic contribution to the show.
Kenzi Shiokava’s work of wood totems combined the Japanese and Brazilian sides of himself. Our guide informed us that he was the former gardener for Marlon Brando.
After our tour we enjoyed lunch in the outdoor restaurant at the museum. It was such a great way to enjoy works of new art with our neighbors.
The next tour is not planned yet, but will be sometime in September or October. The group always welcomes new members. Angela, Clarissa, Nora and Marilee are the chairs of the Art Group. Consider participating in the next tour!
